The Djinn and the Quiet
[Floor]
I recently created a WITCH character for the short campaign we will be playing with my home group. Of course I chose the Fate that I have loved from the very beginning, the Djinn. The Djinn are walking contradictions, vengeful yet honourable, free yet bound, and joyful yet still. Djinn are able to grant wishes to people and I think that is really awesome and will probably make for some interesting role play especially because the wishes come at a price. For every wish a part of the persons soul goes to the Quiet and after the third wish the soul is lost to the Quiet for ever. I really like the idea of that and…. Djinn are Fated by the Quiet.
Not only do I like the Djinn most of all the Fates, I also like the Quiet most of all the demons. The Quiet unlike the other demons is not a plural, it’s really just one big entity and on top of that it isn’t any of those things because the Quiet is nothing. Bam! Mind blown! The mystery and the concept of utter nothingness (of course quite unfathomable for my tiny human mind) create many interesting possibilities for different characters.
After some thought I chose to make a Djinn character whose life has reached the end of the road (at least from her perspective). A 27 year old who lost custody of both children after divorcing the love of her life who then goes on a spiritual journey to India only to find that she absolutely hates the heat, the dirt and the crowds. So once I established this background story I started thinking about how the Quiet would communicate with my character. It’s hard to imagine an entity that consists of eh.. well….nothing to just walk up to someone and ask them if they want to trade in their soul for some nifty powers. Another question I asked myself is what would the Quiet want, what would it ask for other than the soul of the Fated?
So here are the answers I came up with. I don’t think the Quiet speaks, I think it sort of gets into your head and shows you what it wants, not always in words but also in images and emotions. As to my other question, what does the Quiet want, I think it wants nothing or maybe I should say less of everything. That’s why I chose for it to take the memories of my character. I thought it had a nice sort of symbology. Of course this is just my two cents, I suppose there are many more things the silence could want that are a lot more substantial: The “disappearance” of an irksome enemy or the destruction of an artifact, there are lots of good options.
Here is a description of my character’s Fating, for those who are interested:
Sati is lying in bed at night and all her horrible depressing thoughts are running through her head, just going in circles, driving her crazy. And all she wants is for that to stop and she wants that really badly. If only it would stop and everything would be silent.
Then she feels a sort of soothing presence in her mind. Like waves lapping against the shore at tide it slowly grows stronger and washes away the thoughts crowding her mind. She welcomes it and the deal is made almost instinctual. Yes, she thinks, this is what I want, to make everything go away, to make it all stop.
Somehow a proposition takes shape in her mind, her bad memories will be taken away, the memories of her husband who left her, the memories of the children she lost to him and something else that is less defined. She thinks about this unclear thing, it is a part of her, maybe more then anything else, more than her memories. She thinks and a word echoes through her mind. Soul.
She hesitates but then there is more, the promise that she will be stronger and better. She can start again and help others like herself. Give them what they want, what they need the most. Yes, this is what I want.
