An Interview with Tawny Müller

An Interview with Tawny Müller

This is our final interview we are doing during our KS campaign and that is speaking to the lovely Tawny Müller. She is the pen&tablet behind the amazing Oni artwork we have been using in our Kickstarter Campaign. I can’t wait till she gets started on the rest of the artwork for our book!

From what do you draw your inspiration? Inspiration can come suddenly or gradually in many forms. Main sources of my inspiration include music and art created by other artists. I’m especially fond of concept art and the creative process.

What other artists do you admire / influence you? John Howe is by far the most influential artist for me. Other artists I admire include Daniel Dociu, Ciruelo Cabral, Robert Valley, Frank Miller, and Hayao Miyazaki.

How would you describe your style? I’d describe my style as always having an “edge” of concept art to it. I like preserving the thought process behind artwork as it evolves by keeping the harder, and sometime sketchy edges. I almost always use bright, vivid colors. Call it a product of synesthesia.

What previous work are you most proud of? You know, to this day, the single artwork I’m most proud of is a piece I did back in 2007 (seen above ). I had been experimenting with digital coloring for less than a year at that point, and decided I wanted o color an original artwork I had done. It took me three days to color it- I was on a laptop, and didn’t have a tablet, or even a mouse! I used the touchpad to color the entire thing. When I finished it, I thought to myself “If I could do this, I can do anything”.

What is your favourite piece you have made for WITCH so far? My favorite artwork thus-far has been the Oni. I was given a lot of creative leeway, so I really had an opportunity to expand on the design and “get to know” and shape the Oni as I drew. I tried a few color variations, though red was always clear. There’s even some small references and details included that help tell the Oni’s story, if you look hard enough at the details.

If you were Fated, what Fate would you be? I’d have to go with the Lich. We’re altogether too similar to not play together.

If you could have any magical power, what would it be? I’d want to be able to project my “complete, in-depth, and fully colored” ideas and head-scenes directly onto canvas, paper, or general physical space. (Is there a name for this power? If not, there should be.)
